  • We’re looking to hire an Associate Engineer for our Digital Publishing team; their team help to deliver some of the ground breaking news stories that the BBC have uncovered. 
  • We’re also looking to hire a Junior Software Engineer for BBC World Service whose mission is  “Bringing the world closer” – The BBC World Service. 

Role Responsibility

We code and ensure the BBC’s amazing digital experiences, from apps to websites, from iPlayer to CBeebies.

Our ace team of engineers, designers, architects and researchers collaborate closely with product, editorial and technical teams from across the BBC. Together we create elegant, delightful (not to mention award-winning) digital experiences on mobile, tablet, desktop, TV and Voice across digital products: Home, Sport, News & Weather, Children’s & Education, iPlayer and Sounds. 

We’re looking for engineers who can bring imagination and curiosity to help the BBC solve some of its biggest challenges to date and support and maintain the systems and infrastructure that keeps the BBC on air and are responsible for the biggest British-run digital service in the world.

Here’s a snapshot of your individualised growth plan

We commit to supporting your on-boarding, growth and development from your very first day. Below are general goals, however we will discuss, amend and tailor them to your specific development needs when you join us.

Within a month:

  • You’ll complete Onboarding, Mandatory Training and inductionsYou’ll be trained in the team’s ways of working and given a detailed introduction to the systems and tools that we build
  • You’ll  meet the rest of the team, learn about the tech stack, partner teams, history, and where your team is going.
  • You’ll  collaborate doing hands-on coding, pairing with other engineers on a daily basis. Deploying code changes out to the audience.
  • You’ll have 1-2-1’s with line manager in place, have a development plan and a set of goals for your first 6 months

Within 3 months:

  • You’ll have receive the support and mentoring you need when building well engineered, maintainable solutions
  • You’ll be working toward, contributing or driving best engineering practices within the team which include testing and continuous delivery
  • You’ll collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams to get things done in a positive way in keeping with the BBC’s values.

Within 6 months:

  • You’ll have a better understanding of the service(s), app(s) or product(s) within your domain and how they fit with the rest of the BBC
  • As you are aware of how we do things, you will have the opportunity to review, advise and suggest ways we can improve, what we do!
  • You’ll contribute to an environment of engineering excellence and continuous improvement.

Are you that somebody/the right candidate for us?
Tech stack

o   If you have familiarity and/or experience with SOME of these or comparable programming languages you should definitely apply

o   We use a wide variety of tools and technologies across our teams. To give you an idea though:

o   User facing front-end products – we use modern web technologies JavaScript, React, Typescript, and Node.js, where accessibility is part of the process not an afterthought.

o   APIs and back-end services – we use Node.js, Java or Scala, as well as data technologies such as Redis, SQL, NoSQL.

o   Mobile – we design and maintain both hybrid and native applications using Kotlin and Swift.

o   Testing – we use approaches across the pyramid, test driven development, jest and Firebase for example.

o   We create and support reliable and scalable cloud based systems on Amazon Web Services, use Git and GitHub for version control, continuous integration and continuous deployment.


o   Our holistic approach is one of getting work done with maximum flexibility and minimum constraints. Our teams increasingly adopt an Agile way of working; behaviour driven development and test driven development would be preferable, as well as supporting software in a production environment.

o   We value experience communicating effectively with both technical and non-technical colleagues at all levels in an organisation.
