This is an exciting opportunity to lead on the provision of critical IT systems to support research and operational science functions within a world-leading Institution.

About the role:

You will lead the Pipeline Solutions unit for ICT within the Wellcome Sanger Institute. This new unit is focussed on providing all the relevant IT software, workflow and data solutions for high-volume science and scientific operations. This includes developing, deploying and supporting solutions to accelerate our science, as well as longer-term advanced algorithm development and supporting research software used globally.

You will work with senior managers and stakeholders across the institution to develop and define the IT and Informatics strategy to support our high-volume scientific work. This includes ensuring that we fully support our rapidly-evolving science, as well as meeting any operational and regulatory needs. The role holder will oversee projects for new IT pipelines and data and also will lead new initiatives as required, eg to introduce new ways of working (eg Agile methods) into the organisation.

This is a key area of differentiation for the Sanger and the role is critical to the Sanger’s success.

Essential Skills
Experience of large-scale IT systems and data, in complex environments
Experience of high-throughput production systems – delivering high-levels of service and successfully introducing new solutions.
Excellence in leadership and able to communicate and influence at all levels, including board-level, securing the required outcomes in a complex stakeholder landscape
Experience of leading large organisations with a proven track record of forming and leading high-performing teams
Proven track record on delivering change
Excellent strategic thinking: able to lead on the development and delivery of organisation-wide strategies and roadmaps
Ideal Skills
Knowledge or experience of genetics/genomics software and data, and an appreciation of science generally.
Familiarity with agile delivery principles and product-oriented delivery, and ability to appropriately apply them to business problems.
Strong track-record of being able to energise communities on the need for appropriate reuse and sharing of best practice in organisations
